Hermanus has a glorious coastline and stunning scenery; there is no better place to visit and holiday than Hermanus during the Whale season – or any other time of the year actually, as there’s loads to enjoy and explore!
The marvelously pretty seaside town of Hermanus is situated in the Western Cape of South Africa (a short drive of 90mins from Cape Town) and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches, majestic mountain ranges, award winning wine regions, wonderful wildlife species and incredible coastal scenery in the world. The Southern Right Whales migrate to these waters from their Antarctic feeding areas to breed, care for their young and play in our shallow waters of sandy Walker Bay, Hermanus for 6 months every year, from early June to late November. The sight of these massive, gentle and inquisitive creatures relaxing and displaying to one another (and us humans) is truly exhilarating for everyone – and for those that love nature it is completely mind-blowingly astonishing. Whale watching from the land is great as the cliffs are vertical into the sea and thus allowing the Whales to come in very close to the shore – Whale Watching Land-Based Walking Tours are available so that you are able to explore the hidden coves and inlets that the Whales love to laze about in. Your experienced Whale Tour Guide will introduce you to these gems, while you take loads of close-up photos and videos of these incredible mammal encounters. |
Whale Watching Boat Trips will take you out to sea to get even closer. There are only 3 boat licences allowed so as to minimise any possible disturbance to the Whales. 1 boat operates from Hermanus harbour, 1 boat from Gansbaai harbour and 1 boat from Kleinbaai harbour. These last 2 boats are about 60 minutes drive around Walker Bay from Hermanus.
